Propteq founder Brian Brosnan gave participants an introduction to global trends in PropTech

The digital transformation of real estate is firmly on the agenda of real estate professionals in Spain. Madrid-based business school Instituto de Empresa (IE) is currently delivering the inaugural PropTech course: PROPTECH Innovación en el Sector Immobiliario aimed at senior property professionals.

The 9 week course comprises 45 classes over 68 hours and addresses key trends and technology drivers including Big Data, Analytics, Business Models and Transformation of the Property Industry. Attendees are made up of decision-makers from a range of real estate companies including Socimis (Spanish REIT’s), family offices, real estate development firms, asset managers, service providers, consultants, law firms and entrepreneurs.

I addressed the class on 18th May 2018 and provided an introduction to global PropTech. Having spoken with real estate innovators from 45 countries over the last two years, it was a pleasure to share my insights and hear class thoughts on learning from global trends. As we as discussing key trends and innovations, we looked at several case studies. While we discussed behemoths such as WeWork, Opendoor and Airbnb, students were keen to hear about high potential European startups I have met such as Standard Access (Ireland) and Unmortgage (UK).

With an estimated 200 PropTech startups already identified in the Spanish ecosystem, IE’s course provides high level real estate executives with a timely insight into the future of the industry. Many of the classes are being delivered by PropTech trailblazers such as Carlos Olmos from Urban Data Analytics.

Before giving my lesson, I sat in on the lesson by Tono Brusola from real estate crowdfunding platform Housers. He spoke about their business model and ambitious plans for the future.

As far as I am aware, this is Europe’s first PropTech course. I am familiar with Columbia University’s PropTech programmes as their course director Josh Panknin co-hosted a session on Changing the Approach to Innovation in Real Estate at our Propteq Europe summit in February 2018.

IE’s programme is already raising the profile of PropTech in Spain, so it will be interesting to watch against the overall context of PropTech in Europe.
